Mercenary soldiers in the service of the Lady, the Black Company stands against the rebels of the White Rose. They are tough men, proud of honoring their contracts. The Lady is evil, but so, too, are those who falsely profess to follow the White Rose, reincarnation of a centuries-dead heroine.
The Lady sends the Black Company to the backwater town of Juniper to investigate the site of a mysterious obsidian castle that seems to grow larger over the centuries with no apparent outside agency. Croaker and the rest of the Company are stunned to find out that the castle is the work of the Dominator, the still-imprisoned husband of the Lady. Once the castle is complete it will become a portal allowing the Dominator to escape from his underground prison to seek revenge against the Lady and her followers.
Complicating matters further, Croaker discovers that ex-Black Company mercenary Raven is in Juniper along with Darling, the girl that some of them had discovered is truly the White Rose reborn. Now there may be a path to the light, even for such as they, if they can stop the Dominator from completing the castle and breaking free of his prison and keep the secret of the White Rose from the Lady.
